We’re excited to welcome local author Gia Gordon back to the shop for a book launch party celebrating the release of her debut middle grade novel “My So-Called Family”, a powerful chapter book about friendship, foster care, and realizing the true meaning of family – out 11/12/24! You might recognize Gia from her previous book signing at Bobzbay…she is also the author of the YA novel “The Redemption of Daya Keane”, a heartfelt queer coming-of-age story set against the backdrop of a small town’s evangelical megachurch culture.

Join us at the bookstore on release day (Tuesday, November 12) from 4:30p-6p to celebrate the launch of “My So-Called Family”! The author reading and book talk will start at 5pm, with a Q&A session and book signing to follow, plus snacks and giveaways! This event is FREE and family-friendly!

Pre-orders are now open for signed editions of “My So-Called Family”! Quantities on release day are limited so click here to reserve your copy in advance: https://bobzbay.square.site/product/gg/12559

About “My So-Called Family”: It’s the first week of middle school, and Ash (don’t call her “Ashley”) already has a class assignment: Make a family tree. But how can Ash make a family tree if she doesn’t have a family? Ever since she was four years old, Ash has been in foster care, living with one so-called family after another. Now she’s stuck with Gladys. And the only place Ash feels safe is in the branches of her favorite tree, drawing in her sketchbook, hidden from the view of Gladys’ son Jordan. As Jordan becomes harder to hide from, and more dangerous to be around, Ash isn’t sure who she can trust. A new friend, an old friend, some teachers at school? Sometimes the hardest part of asking for help is knowing who to ask. In My So-Called Family, Gia Gordon weaves a lyrical story about complicated family dynamics that’s perfect for fans of Fish in a Tree and Counting by 7s.

About the Author: Gia Gordon is a disabled author, youth activist, and former educator. She’s co-founder of the non-profit Never Counted Out, which provides books to classrooms and community programs. Common themes in Gia’s work include found family, hidden identities, and living one’s truth. When she’s not writing, Gia can be found thrifting or turning no-longer-wanted household goods into beautifully painted designs at Salvage Art.
