Experience Illinois State University Family Weekend Beyond Campus

September 15, 2025

Illinois State University’s Family Weekend is a perfect chance for Redbird families to connect, explore campus, and enjoy all that ISU offers. While the official programming is full and engaging, the Bloomington-Normal area surrounding ISU has plenty more to offer. These additional ideas are great for rounding out your itinerary and discovering local gems. Check them out below!

Where to Eat: Local Restaurant Favorites

Beyond the usual suspects like Pizza Payaa, Medici, Destihl, and The Lucca Grill, here are more excellent choices:

  • Parkview Inn — Located on historic Route 66, serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Known for broasted chicken, handmade pork tenderloins, homemade pies, and a warm, family-friendly atmosphere with patio views of Miller Park.
  • Avanti’s Italian Restaurant — A longtime favorite in Normal. Established in 1971, with home-style pasta, salads, sandwiches, and fresh Italian bread made in house.
  • Ephipany Farms, Anju Above, Alexander’s Steakhouse, and Bloom Bawarchi also offer variety depending on what you’re craving.

Brunch & Morning Coffee

In addition to Egg Republic and Fort Jesse Café:

  • Bloomin Café — A great brunch spot operated by ISU Redbird alums. It features fresh, healthy ingredients, seasonal specials, and a fun, welcoming environment.

Also, explore local coffee shops listed on VisitBN for places to grab a good coffee or pastry before weekend events.

Outdoor ACTIVITIES & Exploring Local Flavors

You already have the Constitution Trail on your list — great choice. Here are additional suggestions:

  • Historic Route 66 Drive / Tour — There are several Route 66-themed attractions around Bloomington-Normal: Gene’s Dairy Delight, the Cruisin’ With Lincoln on 66 Visitors Center, vintage road signs and murals. These make for a scenic and memorable drive or photo tour.
  • Miller Park Zoo — Animals, gardens, walking paths, and plenty of outdoor time for families.
  • McLean County Museum of History — Great indoor/outdoor hybrid: you can explore the exhibits, then walk around downtown Bloomington.

 Shopping, Entertainment, and Indoor Options

  • Campustown Shops — Conveniently located near ISU, Campus Town is a hub for ISU apparel.
  • Apricot Lane Boutique — A trendy shop offering stylish women’s apparel and accessories, including fashion-forward ISU merchandise.
  • Children’s Discovery Museum — Hands-on, engaging, and ideal if there are younger kiddos.
  • Downtown Bloomington & Uptown Normal — Full of boutique shopping, public art, galleries, and nice places to window shop or pick up gifts.
  • David Davis Mansion — A beautiful historical site to explore architecture, gardens, and period rooms.
